I wish the Times had put the Gerritsen Beach story on City Room first, so people could comment. It feels odd not to be able to read and write comments online when a story is about a blog

I have to agree with the Eater comments about the Carnegie Deli. Sometimes these places effectively vanish before they actually close. This is one of those cases.

Yes, the Carnegie deli is a "landmark" that has served as nothing more than a tourist trap for many years, and the original spirit vacated long ago.
As far as New York's best years, I'd say a tie between 47' and 78'.1978 is an interesting choice because I know more than a few natives who swear there was something special about 1979.

It seems impossible to name a greatest year for NYC, but I would have loved to have been around in 1824 when Lafayette made his superstar tour.
