Manatus Plywooded

The beloved Manatus restaurant on Bleecker closed two years ago. At the time, I heard a rumor that a Calvin Klein store would be taking its place.

Instead, the spot sat empty, creating two years of high-rent blight.

Now the place is covered in green plywood. Something's coming.

Permits say only, "REPLACE EXISTING STOREFRONT."

Any guesses?

Sweet ol' Manatus - loved it back in the late 80s/early 90s. Revisited it a few years ago, and was heartbroken - it was filthy, bugs on the walls, bad service, inedible food.

Sometimes, a business just comes to the end of its lifespan, and it's time to move on.

Or sometimes a business is so soaked for high rent that they can't keep up the quality they were known for because nearly every penny goes to a greedy landlord instead of to high quality employees, pest control, and inventory.

I'll always think of that space as Clyde's. Early to mid '80's. Friendly gay bar with decent food.
