CAR?
Party idea:
1. Enjoy flasks of blackberry wine.
2. Browse this new Bowery boutique.
I see a fun Marty After Dark episode!
What planet is the pickpocketed person from? I'm guessing Planet #White Whine!
@Grade "A" Fancy: Ha! I'll start working on that idea, thanks!
Dead Horse Bay: Blech! I'm really surprised there hasn't been more outrage about this.
Gym lockers: it never ceases to amaze me how often this happens. At my last gym, the majority of lockers were unlocked and women kept their purses in there, as well as laptops and other valuables from work/school. Several times, I thought about taking the stuff out or moving it as I had a lock and an empty locker was hard to find. When I couldn't lock my things, I took my bag with me to the machines. Sorry to say it, but these people need to learn a lesson the hard way.
600 bucks for a stupid wallet?
Heh heh, I guess the more money you have, the more clueless you are.
People who stress about rent do not take jacuzzis.
In reference to the WSJ article, why is every new opening "a gallery, an event space and a retail outlet"? Do people not have an idea of what they want to do, besides open a vague business and get richer?
That story on the Misha Nicole chick made me puke up my nuggets. I actually want to go into her store and take a big smelly dump on her floor. Or I would pay handsomely for someone to do it. No, actually, I want to do it...
Think of all the reclaimed retail space when the banks finally die of overexpansion.
You know your narcissism is at its peak when you blithely post a Craigslist ad asking for it back... at your doorstep.
made me wonder if the pickpocket was also a hook-up.
and i love that White Whine.
The Dead Horse Bay photograph is quite something. Check out Nathan Kensinger's pictures on DHB, too:

So according to Misha, the Bowery is developing that "edgy" feel she's looking for??!!!
I don't even know what to say to that other than it hurts my mind...alot.
Would someone explain to me what "hipsters" actually are? Or is there a link that would explain it. Other groups in the past that were referenced I could identify (yuppies, preppies, hippies, punks) but I swear I can't put my finger on "hipsters." I live in Queens and go through Brooklyn and Manhattan a lot, but I'm unaware of ever seeing one....probably because I don't know what they're supposed to look like. (I'm dead serious here).
Misha Nicole says "I wanted a gallery — it helps sell the brand..." like it would never occur to her to just love art for its own sake and support artists through exhibitions. At least she gives to charity, but the author of the article sums that up as "a clever business tactic" like that would be the REAL reason for it. Also, is "incentivized" a word? It really stinks to high heavens.
Dead Horse Bay is actually kinda cool. Vintage garbage is way more interesting than modern garbage.
@Anonymous 11:55PM:
I think the biggest difference between hipster-culture and the other youth cultures you cite is that hipsters are the first without their own pervading motive or ideology for lack of a better word. Instead they simply borrow from other cultures and previous generations. I think this is because kids of baby boomers are the first generation in history who actually would want to emulate and appropriate the culture of their parents (who were the first generation to enjoy "youth culture" in its own right).
Thanks for the link to my Dead Horse post Jeremiah! It gave me a warm fuzzy for the day!
I am really tired of the word "gallery" as a catch-all for high-end stores. Ditto "boutique." Both are attempts to pander to the un-monied audience. Not only that, but are women (yes they are 99% women) that devoid of ideas as entrepreneurs that they simply copy and paste one gallery/boutique from another? It's less entrepreneurial than it is a way to be seen and talked about.
As for the pickpocket....I'm from the Midwest, but I was taught common sense. It's got nothing to do with where you're form, although living in NYC should calcify your paranoid instincts.
I'm late on this one, but after reading that craigslist posting, I have one (perhaps stupid) question:
The author of that post thanks the pickpocket for leaving his ID behind but then says "you know where I live". How is that possible if he only stole credit cards and a phone?
Just a thought:
After what happened to Narcissus, I would assume yunnies would be afraid to get too close to water, but I guess Jacuzzis are ok since all the bubbles obscure their reflections...
James Taylor : Thank you for that answer. I'm sure what you're saying is greatly true. It still sounds kind of vague to me, though, as far as recognizing an actual visibly-identifiable group. But maybe that's part of it too. Like, I've heard you see a lot of them on the L Train, but I've been on the L and only seen the usual variety of people, no one I could identify as "hipster". But, thanks.
i left my stuff at crunch on lafayette because i had to go out that night and didn't want to lug it around (also i paid for the locker). so, the next day, someone (not the crunch people, which i believe) snapped the lock during the night (as the locker rooms are unattended) and my stuff was all gone. there was nothing of value- just a gym bag, t-shirt, sweats and sneakers and dirty underwear and socks. crooks are crooks, doesn't matter if it is a ghetto gym or planet reebok-
