Willie's

Some good news has come out of the tragedy for the block of 9th Avenue between 17th and 18th--that collection of small, long-time businesses evicted by the Stonehenge Group to make room for what will probably be a combo Chase bank and frozen-yogurt joint or some other awfulness.

The New Barber Shop was forced to shutter last month, but barber Willie has survived to scissor again.

Willie has opened his own shop, under his own name. Thanks to reader Richie Cohen for sharing this photo and the good news. Willie's Barber Shop is now open at 235 West 18th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. Bonus: The business it replaced was a realtor's office.

Be sure to go in, get a haircut, and give your good wishes to Willie!

I am totally loyal to my barber on the East Side, but I might stop in to congratulate Willie. This is good news. (And yes, the bonus you mention is kind of sweet.)

Went to Bar 82 (2nd Ave. between 8th & 9th.) Climbed on the only bar stool available...next to 2 Alpha Lesbians. At some point, it got a little tight, space wise. So I moved my seat a little to the right, away from them and said: "I'll give you an extra 6 inches". Alpha Lesbian # 1: "No, we're not interested in that."
It's a true story! Made my day/night.

Good for Willie, although he should have sprung for the apostrophe on his sign!

His shop actually is not replacing a real estate office. That's still downstairs next to it, although they are rarely around. The spot Willie took over had sat empty for about a decade after being the home of Prudence Designs in the late '90s and early '00s.
