Julius' Egg Creams

I'm happy to add an unusual new addition to my ongoing Guide to Egg Creams.

Julius' Bar has recently added the egg cream to their menu. Not your uncle Morty's egg creams, these are spiked with Bailey's, Kahlua, or vanilla vodka. I opted for the vanilla, which seemed more true to the form.

Though my $10 vodka egg cream was made with the correct ingredients--Fox's U-Bet syrup and fountain seltzer--it is obviously not for egg cream purists.

Uncharacteristically served in a Bud Light pint glass, it's all foam and the taste takes some getting used to. After a few sips of this very strong, boozy mix, however, and you'll be too tipsy to taste it anyway.

I recommend it just for the experience of drinking an egg cream at Julius' wonderful bar.

Interesting concept--egg creams--I would prefer the one with Baileys--or perhaps Kaluaha--still Ray's for $1.50 is still the BEST!

Mindy's soda shop on the corner of 7th Street & 2nd Avenue in the early 60s had egg cream's for 15 cents. Man, they were delicious! But Kiev Restaurant took over and started serving Ukrainian food till they were shut down, probably went bankrupt.

Spiked egg creams at Julius' bar is an all-around win!

I'm with Melanie. You need the creaminess of Bailey's to mellow the vodka.

Jere, here's my take on "Not your ____'s whatever" and other current food usage.

Hey Jeremiah,

Just want to quickly recommend a great movie I caught last night, "News from Home" directed by Chantal Akerman. Absolutely essential for lovers of 70's era NYC. Heartbreaking to see what once was.

baha, my grandmother's pasta is not pasta, either--it's macaroni. not sure when the word "pasta" became popular, but i never heard of it until the 90s.

thanks meccows, for the film recommendation. always good to find lost scenes of the lost city.
