In the recent past, the sight of a decorated Checker meant free rides for everyone from Taxi Ray. Today, it means free rides for customers of HSBC Bank only. Because, you know, New York's got "different values" now:

OK... there was a bakery in the 1970s and 1980s on the Lower East Side. I think it was a kosher bakery on maybe Ridge, Attorney, or Clinton Street. Can anybody remember the name? It is driving me crazy.
So heartwarming to read about the HSBC freeloader taxi in the week in which the state and city's hack organization, the TLC, unveiled its 50 cent cab surcharge, a.k.a. The 2009 NYC Cab Drivers' Tips Consfication Law. Perhaps the corporate behemoths who are Mayor McChee$e's only true constituents can get around to free transportation for all, so I can retire in comfort, stretched out in the back seat of a Pinkberry-festooned Checker.
Marjorie-
Moishe's Bakery on Grand St. east of Pitt (just about where E. Broadway meets Grand) lives on.
There was another bakery on E. Broadway (between Clinton and Jefferson, I think) that closed 15 or 20 years ago whose name I can no longer recall. I just remember it being a few steps down from the street.
I found out! It was Honey and
Spice. Another one that I think closed was Gertel's. But, I was thinking of Honey and Spice.

Aargh, Marjorie.
I grew up across the street from Honey & Spice.
It was on the southern end of the little shopping strip on Clinton between Grand and E. B'way.
Should had that one.
(Sorry for the hijack, Jeremiah.)
