"It’s November 2008. A young Pakistani Muslim is watching television and sees that this man—Barack Hussein Obama—is the new face of America. In one simple image, America’s soft power has been ratcheted up not a notch, but a logarithm. A brown-skinned man whose father was an African, who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, who attended a majority-Muslim school as a boy, is now the alleged enemy. If you wanted the crudest but most effective weapon against the demonization of America that fuels Islamist ideology, Obama’s face gets close. It proves them wrong about what America is in ways no words can." --Andrew Sullivan

One cause in particular that might get less attention: Bloomberg's move to cut the funding to the Ali Forney Center's drop-in and intake center. The Ali Forney Center works with homeless LGBTQ youth to give them housing and services. Depending who you ask, somewhere between 20% and 50% of all homeless youth are queers, largely queers who had to leave home due to homophobia.

This is the only center that works with queer youth directly. Closing their intake center would I believe be tantamount to closing all of their programs. It's a huge deal to a vulnerable population, and the kind of budget cut that has a huge impact but doesn't get the same attention as cutting more mainstream human services (or the cops or firefighters, but those are less analogous.)

California will pay for this sin against God by filing for bankruptcy in the next few months. Rot in hell. Worse: I expect a lot of gays will opt to move elsewhere, and - guess what? - they are disproportionately high earners, which will cut the legs out from under their newly-proposed income tax hike.

Suck it down.
