As you get all pumped up for this weekend's blog-tacular New York Lost conference, here's me and Grieve in conversation with its organizer, Bryan Waterman. [P&W]

  1. The store that is on the site of the former theater isn't a bodega. A rather large greengrocer/market.

  2. Great interview. Just one thing.

STOP WITH THE PINK SHIRTS ALREADY. I wear pink shirts, I LOVE PINK SHIRTS, if you disparage them again I will hunt you down and make you wear all of my pink shirts simultaneously like some Barbie-themed layer cake at a sweet sixteen bash.

Don't hate the shirt, hate the playa.

  3. That comment applies to Grieve as well, I'M WATCHING YOU TOO.

  5. The biggest Blog poachers are the AM and METRO New York papers. Bunch of rip of artists.

  6. Ok, have your damn pink shirts. But You GET NO PASS for those sandals.
I will condemn you for eternity for wearing sandals around the city.

What would Frank Sinatra be saying
about people in Manhattan wearing Sandals? or any other borough.

    Disgrazia

  7. OK, the pink shirts are awful but WTF at all this sandal hating lately? I just think "sandal" is too vague a descriptor to be a signifier of douchiness. There are Teva sandals on hippies, gladiator sandals on fashion-y types, jeweled sandals on the girlfriends of pink-shirted assholes ... I mean, ALL these people can't be douches.

  8. Contrary to the repeated comments from anon, there's good precedent for sandal wearing and sandal hating in NY history:

Sandals were a big deal in the Village during the folk scene, esp hand-made.

Dylan most famously warned people away from wearing them, though, in Subterranean Homesick Blues. He was probably sick of all the posers cruising the Square in their new pair of sandals looking for the scene.

    For what it's worth.

  9. thanks for the bit of history, bryan. maybe one day, the pink-shirt controversy will make it into the books.

as for sandals, for me it comes down to a hygiene hazard. the sidewalks are covered with feces, urine, puke, and jagged bits of junk. i don't want my feet in that.

  10. One of the reasons why I quit blogging (or more like "tumbling"), was that I could never go up to par with you and Grieve; I was mostly just copying and pasting your and Grieve's posts, and news/articles about NYC. I could never find my own voice. Also, I felt like a hypocrite railing on some of the places and people that have gentrified EV or NYC, yet I find myself going to those places with those newbies -- the gentrifiers.

Anyway great interview. Am surprised that you nor Grieve are not in the panel for Saturday. Would have like to see the men behind those blogs.

  11. P.S. I also wear pink shirts, now and then.

  12. thanks esquared. you know, who's not hypocritical, or contradictory, here and there? this stuff is complicated and i am no absolutist. the main thing is to be conscious, to be aware, to think critically, and examine this stuff. i think, basically, that's all i'm trying to do here.

it can even be done in a pink shirt. (not that i have one, or anything.)

  13. Sandals? I'd rather have my feet amputated.

  14. I'm looking forward to the blogging panel. There's a definite camaraderie amongst bloggers, though many have "met" only online. That much was clear to me from hearing people speak at the Memorial for Gowanus Lounge's Bob Guskind last March.

Will we see you there JM? More to the point, will we recognize you when we see you there?
