Waverly Reopens

This morning, the Waverly Restaurant diner is serving its first breakfast in months.

It's their first day open since the renovation.

Long-time customers walking by are surprised and excited to see the lights on and people dining in the windows. They step inside and shout, "Welcome back!" One customer hands money to the waiter behind the counter and says, "This is just to say welcome back."

Every time someone says "Welcome back," the people dining over plates of bacon and eggs pump their fists in the air and shout "hooray!"

It's a good day at the Waverly.

  8. I happily proceeded to the Waverly as soon as I heard it had reopened. And I am ecstatic to report is a triumph of intelligent renovation, keeping all the hallmark design items -- the naugahyde booths, the wrought iron chandeliers, the mural, even the driftwood clock -- and managing to add more space as well. The staff, looking nicely rested, was all familiar faces (with the exception of the young woman who is now alternately and greeter and the cahier). And the food (and the tableware) is also "as it was." My Western omelette was served in a frying pan (as has been the Waverly tradition), with crisp hash browns (and where else in New York City can you get hash browns -- not the ubiquitous home fries?) In other words, the same old beloved Waverly, nicely cleaned up. Now let's get it landmarked!
