*Everyday Chatter

David Cross, comedian and EVGrieve reader (what am I, chopped liver?), is fed up with life in the East Village: "...there's a big, huge 7-11 with big, beautiful 7-11 signs. There's an IHOP on 14th Street, Subway sandwiches all over the place. The thing is, I left Atlanta a long time ago and I'm spending way too much money to live in Atlanta again, you know? I mean it really is...it's just... It's mildly heartbreaking. It's just becoming more and more like a mall. I might as well be in St. Louis. It's very, very quickly, rapidly losing a lot of its character." [Gothamist]

Upper West Siders are nauseated by the "garish" and "too suburban" new candy shop coming to their neighborhood--and it's called Sugar & Plumm Purveyors of Yumm. [DNA]

Thomas Beller tells of life in the laundry room of a half-gentrified old NYC building. [PRD]

BMW Guggenheim Lab feels very proud of itself. [EVG]

After a painful, 5-year struggle, Our Lady of Vilnius is coming down. [NYT]

Visit the most adorable abandoned building in the city. [SNY]

  3. Regarding the Guggenheim Lab:
That is one of the most nauseating
examples of drivel (bullshit) I've come across in a long time.
Was it written by a satirist?

  4. Cross has realized that EV has been gentrified and homogenized just now? Where has he been? Oh, right, at cargo short central at UCB, making jokes...

  5. I am so sick of folks like Guggenheim "reinventing" neighborhoods that were perfectly fine to begin with and just want to be left the fuck alone. They give artists a bad name. And enough already with "video installations". If I see one more monotonous repetitive boring mundane inane "film" again I'll fucking scream. Apologies to Andy Warhol.

  6. That abandoned building is really wonderful - and I'm so glad to hear it's going to be restored.

Good point, Mr. Cross. It's great to see one of the stars from those Chipmunks filmmercials complaining about other people enfranchising with IHOP and 7-11. I'd see your current movie, but a $12 ticket is way too much money for recycled, prostituted comedy, you know?

  8. Cross plans to go to Brooklyn, ey? Watch him move to B-burg and complain next year that it too has lost its authenticity.

  9. Thank-you, Little Earthquake. Hypocritical critics are as revolting as what they're critiquing. The gatekeepers of the social commentary world!
