La Taza de Oro closed in 2015 after 68 years on Chelsea's 8th Avenue. The reasons were complex, including money struggles, Con Ed, and Google.
Now it's going to be an Ikinari Steak. It's a rapidly growing chain restaurant. There's another one on E. 10th Street. And another one opening on Bleecker. And another one...
Thanks for this sad update. Even though I went vegetarian a few years ago, I still think about the great chuletas w/ applesauce that was my favorite dish at Taza de Oro. A question: Weren't there two 'Tazas' a block apart at one point --- sometime in the '70s or '80s?
ReplyDeleteIkanari is a stand and eat your steak place. I assume that means people eat faster and more people can be crammed in there. Interesting concept.

ReplyDeleteThere used to be a little Cuban place on Eighth Avenue in Chelsea where I used to stop for flan and cafe con leche when I was in the neighborhood. The restaurant was long and narrow, and I would sit at the counter and chat with the warm, sweet staff. Was that La Taza de Oro? If not, it was a similar kind of place, and is probably gone.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in Washington Heights for 39 years. Recently, on a neighborhood map, I saw my neighborhood perkily labeled: "Next neighborhood to gentrify!"
