Houston Street is getting benches. Who wants to sit in the middle of Houston Street? Same people who sit in the middle of 9th Ave I suppose. If you build it (and add WiFi), they will come:

Tonight the public is invited to a Chelsea Community Meeting at St. Paul's Church, 7 pm, to welcome the Gem Hotel (no comment). The enticing part is there will be a presentation on the history of Chelsea, complete with some great vintage photos, including images like this one of the old Allerton:

  1. ProPack is a brand of dog food. Viva is a paper towel. Hell, why not rebrand the entire city? Chinatown can be called Windex Village, the Bowery is now Snappleburg, and Carol Gardens can be the Keebler Elf Factory.

  2. We were noticing last night how nice Houston Street looked from Sixth Ave to Mercer St. Then at Mercer Street the bad old evil forever-under-construction day-and-night emerged. Sigh.

  3. I suppose the people who would sit in the middle of Houston St. are proabably the same people who would sit in the middle of Broadway on the Upper West Side.

  4. I made out with a girl (first date) on one of those middle-of-the-island benches on Broadway and maybe 84th. Boy, was that weird.

  5. Maybe they'll put benches in the middle of Canal St.! BTW, the Broadway sitters moved to Miami only to be evicted when the 'hood was named South Beach. Tell 'em about Houston St. if they're still around.
