Carnegie Neon Sign

Yesterday, workers removed the gorgeous neon sign of the shuttered Carnegie Deli.

The 79-year-old deli closed at the end of December--for reasons no one fully understands.

Its famous Walls of Fame were recently stripped and its contents auctioned:

  1. Man lives until it is remembered. Our memory - that's all. I started doing art project "1937 Carnegie Deli"

  2. Amazing to think of the number of souls who came and went, wearing those floors down. And now it's lifeless. Being picked liked the carcass of a dead animal.

  3. This is really one of those losses I felt was beyond imagining - at least years ago before all the other unimaginable losses in that very neighborhood. I did enjoy that delicatessen, met friends there, ate well. Perhaps the sign will be sent out to Vegas where the imaginary New York lives.

Here's a commemorative mug (and clock):

    I loved that sight. JS

  4. Downtowner 9:32- The same could be said for New York city as a whole- Amazing to think of the number of souls who came and went, wearing those streets down. And now it's lifeless. Being picked liked the carcass of a dead animal.

  5. In "Broadway Danny Rose" the neon sign was practically another character in the movie. Go to 3:34. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBtQ-aWhtGA
