Watermelons Flying

On yet another miserably hot summer day, the simple joy of watching men unloading watermelons from a truck can make all the difference.



The heavy green globes sail through the air, one after another, tossed from man to man.



People stop to enjoy the urban spectacle of precision and grace, waiting for a melon to drop, to burst in an explosion of pink. But none fall.



The men are acrobats, somehow, on the corner of Second Avenue and Ninth Street. For a moment, they are magicians making watermelons fly.

    This is a beautiful post! I'll bet the onlookers made the watermelon men happy, too. It also puts things in perspective for me in this really difficult heat. At least I have an indoors, paper-pushing job.

    You know, last fall I saw some guys tossing pumpkins from a truck to their fruit and vegetable stand in a similar fashion. It was a beautiful moment.

    What a beautiful post this is! Also, it puts in perspective how lucky I am to have an indoors job in this heat.
    Last fall I saw something a little similar when I passed some men tossing gracefully these big pumpkins from truck to display stand outside their store in an untrendy section of the UWS.
