Cash Mob @ Odessa

Recently, we learned about cash mobs--they're like flash mobs, but their purpose is to infuse a local business with cash. The word goes out across social media, and a crowd (hopefully) shows up at a business to spend money. A little group of us started talking about this on Facebook and decided that our first cash mob destination will be Odessa on Avenue A.

Goggla did the legwork, running the idea by the diner's manager, and they'll be ready and waiting for a mob on Wednesday, March 7, at 6:00 pm. At that time, meet at the "light" Odessa for dinner, then go next door to the "dark" Odessa for drinks. Bring cash.

The "light" Odessa is at 119 Avenue A, and the "dark" Odessa is at 117.

Spread the word (tweet, facebook, blog, whatever) and support this local business!

What struggling small business in the city should we Cash Mob next?

  3. I wish you the best in your upcoming Cash Mob. Isn't this a great idea. I've been a small business owner my whole life, so I can really appreciate the benefits that can come from a neighborhood that is in the mood to show some support to the local businesses. If I may suggest for your next Cash Mob or perhaps for someone out there that is reading this...here's a website that offers a bunch of resources for planning and they will even build a FREE landing page with a digital link so that you can promote the details on FaceBook, Twitter or a Blog. http://cashmobmarketing.com I wish you the best and applaud your efforts.

  4. Let's get a big group together to show how much we value our local businesses. If this goes well, we can target others (in any neighborhood).

  5. I've tried to come up with something wrong about this idea, but I can't. I hope it becomes a regular feature.

All you good people warm my heart.

Goggla, Jeremiah, you folks are the best.

Wish I could join but I have a gig that night. So bummed! I do visit Odessa 2x weekly so I cash mob them in my own way every week!

    Please have one for me!

Hahaha on the "light" and "dark" Odessa!

  8. This is a beautiful idea. I'll try to stir myself out of a horrendous late-winter malaise to get there on Wednesday.

  10. Whole Earth Bakery on St. Marks is very small, only enough seating for 4-6, but it would be a nice place to Cash Mob take out and sit in Tompkins Square Park http://www.wholeearthbakery.com/
The rent has doubled, so this long time bakery is on the verge of extinction. It really needs a cash mob.

  11. @stef - I'm sure it's fine to come later than 6. Odessa is open 24 hrs, so for anyone who can't be there right on the dot, you're still welcome!

  12. Get the cheese blintzes or crazy fries (Canadian poutine).
I go late night to Odessa all the time and LOVE it. The waiters are also super nice.

  13. Great idea - and a GREAT idea to do the Whole Earth Bakery next - wonderful friendly healthy affordable oasis it would be heartbreaking to lose - it seems like just the small, independent kind of business this is intended for
