Chinatown is falling: "Sitting in a tiny kitchen, with a view across Delancey to one of those silver, faux-industrial-style million-dollar condos with rooftop birch trees, Mrs. Zheng, 58, smiles and waves her hand as if to bat away flies. 'It is battles all the time here; lots of people are leaving,'" she says while her landlord schemes up new ways to get her out. [NYT]

  1. That article about Chinatown seems way too good to by in the NYTimes, ridiculing its main demographic. I was shocked.

Love this blog. And love the term "Doucheousie."

  2. What a funny article about Bryant Park. A bunch of douchebags getting worked up over a showing of Airplane.
I'm really getting sick of this city. I've started fantasizing about Arizona, where people carry guns.

  3. What's the big deal about the Bryant Park article? I didn't get how it was a nightmare. Not that I'd ever want to watch a movie in a park - not my kind of venue for that. But the people who are there seem to enjoy themselves, so who cares? Furthermore, it's in Midtown, amidst office towers, not in the holy land that is the East Village. I'm beginning to believe that "doucheousie" is a term for people who are having fun in spite of (and oblivious to) the puritanical bitching of the curmudgerati.

  4. I agree with Lorenzo - that article on disappearing Chinatown was way above par for NYT.

But, of course, it is hard to feel sorry for the woman who has lived there for 30 years, raised children there, and now is being forced out; she can't be allowed to stand in the way of 'progress'.

After all, she probably wouldn't know an artisinal cupcake if she stepped on one.

  5. Doucheousie is an excellent term, but "curmudgerati" is even better. Copyright that phrase because it has never been indexed in the Google before now. (I checked)

I am proud member of the curmudgerati, BTW! :)

  7. chinatown: bullshit $10-20000 to leave!! i was offered that for my studio on 1979! (w.13st, between 5/6th). everyone should get alot more. AND an apt in a govt funded building near chinatown/in sunset park brooklyn. for a comparable rent for what they pay now. plus a minimal of 50,000 usd.
