"Bleecker Street is officially the new Rodeo Drive after a blockbuster real-estate deal pushed prices for retail property into the realm of world-famous shopping strips." [NYDN]
The sale of Neo-Brooklyn continues--not just Ford, but now "the Gap is sponsoring a holiday pop-up shop that is all about Foods Found in Brooklyn (or at least its more aggressively tattooed parts)." [VV]
Far East 3rd Street now a nightlife mecca as a "new crowd descends". "It's a weird vibe when people come here for events who have no context of the economics or politics of the Lower East Side—they just come for events," said poet Steve Cannon. [WSJ]
The new owner of Polonia responds to criticism, "I won't be changing Polonia back to a diner. If you enjoy eating at diners (which I don't mind once in a while) then go eat at a diner, but please don't come in and tell me that you rather have Polonia as a diner." [EVG]

Re: Screaming on 6th St - I live very near there, but didn't hear the shouting. However, a few weeks ago, there was a shooting on that same block that was reported by neighbors, but I never saw anything about it in the press. I do hope someone called 911 about the man shouting for help. Crime is happening, but not being reported. I think it's important we (residents) stay informed. This area is not as safe as we are led to believe.

A rough week for diners, with the Scobee closing and all. The landlady raised the rent from $1500 to $10,000/month, to make the Scobee close down. What we will probably get is another bank.

What the heck is the Scobee Diner?
Jill - Scobee was a popular Diner in Little Neck, Queens. It recently closed after about 50 years in business. Choice late-night hang spot when I was a kid.
A little late but...I live across the street from the screaming on 6th Street incident. Not as bad as it seemed but still disturbing (guy's voice sure can carry). Basically 2 homeless guys got in an argument over sleeping arrangements. They figured it out. Concerned passersby & the police questioning resulting in the painful to hear "leave me alone"s. Resolved by morning with both guys (plus one pet white rat) waking up under shared covers. They just didn't want to be bothered by people.
