Skyline & Cat

This weekend is the last chance you'll have to buy books at Skyline. But there is some good news. According to People magazine's website "People Pets," Skyline's beloved bookstore cat, Linda, has found a new home.

You may recall the bookshop's plea to Gothamist readers: "The shop told us the owner may not be able to take her home due to other pets, saying: 'Linda is a territorial cat. She's had complete run of that bookstore her entire life.'"

Well, that part has worked out for Linda and Skyline owner, Rob Warren. He told People Pets, "After much contemplation, I decided to find a home for the two older [cats] with a woman who loves cats, so Linda can come home with me. I am so happy that this has worked out so Linda and I can continue to hang out!"

And there's more potentially good news in this article: "Warren intends to pursue his book-selling business via other commercial means and spaces."

Does this mean a new Skyline is in the works?

  1. He's given up his other two cats in order to keep Linda?! Wow...I think there's something in my eye...

  2. J, guess we can add cats to that list of things to say goodbye to. I can't imagine bank branches and Duane Reades having cats. Do the numerous Marc Jacobs emporia have cats? Ralph Lauren? Coach?

  3. Last week, the Ralph Lauren on University had a family of sasquatches in the store...not nearly as cuddly as a cat.

  4. Linda is a very lucky girl. Among the cats up for adoption on petfinder.com, there are some heartbreaking bios. Yesterday this one caught my eye. NYC's Picaso Veterinary Fund is looking for a home for this 16 year old former deli cat from the LES...

"Helen is a 16 yr old calico. She lived in a deli on the Lower east side her whole life where she used to greet the customers each day. Last week the owner decided she didn't want to feed her anymore and threw her out. Helen urgently needs a foster home or a permanent home. She isn't used to living with other animals but she is affectionate and quiet and maybe fine with another older quiet cat. She deserves a nice warm place to spend her senior years. If you are interested in Helen please contact Emily at emily10012@aol.com.
Helen is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered"

  5. i think those boutiques, or others like them, have dogs. french bulldogs or yorkies or something like that. it's the classic battle between dog people and cat people. (not that i dislike dogs, as a species, but cats are certainly the superior animal.)

  6. So glad that Linda found a home, but WTF is wrong with the "owner" (and I use that term lightly!) of Helen at the LES deli? Threw her out after 16 years? What's the name of the deli? -- I'll tell all my NYC friends to boycott it. I'd adopt Helen, but I'm on the opposite coast. Hopefully someone at Petfinder will see her story and adopt her asap.

  7. That is very messed up re: the cat Helen and deli owner who threw her out (after 16 YEARS?!). (thanks for posting, Tricia. I love calicos! but alas cannot adopt Helen.) Jeremiah, I agree with you (love your tone) about the superiority of cats! And it is so true that these other type stores would never have cats, or it would be unlikely.

  8. Now that Linda the cat has a home to come to, let's hope that Skyline Books can find a new home as well....
