What did Villagers wish for Christmas in 1955? According to this vintage Village Voice, they wanted "Money, just money."
One gal, a Wall Street secretary, wanted "a mink coat, a Thunderbird car, and a million dollars," while a PR fella just hoped for lots of books and records.

They also longed for:
-a box of cigars
-a tote bag
-a trip to Europe
-a happy wife
-new drapes and slipcovers
What do you wish for this holiday season?
P.S. Don't miss the rare shot of the Women's House of Detention on this page
A new mayor. And a Wall Street secretary in a mink coat. And world peace.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to keep thinking about this.
I was just a kid back then but every time I walked by that House, man, the cursing those evil women spat down on the good passers by, gave people the shivers (I was warned there were 'evil women' in that bad house, but of course I now know better now).
ReplyDeleteHere's a better picture of Women's House:

Wait a second...Robert Wagner used to be the mayor?? Awesome!
ReplyDeleteFor my birthday this year, my parents planted a bunch of trees in my name somewhere...
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there's an urban equivalent to this, like buy a brick of a building we don't want destroyed, or pay a small fraction of the rent for a store we don't want closed down...
That is all I'd ever want for all my birthdays and Christmases.
