In case you're left without a place to feast tomorrow, try some of these locales for homemade-like cooking. The Howard Johnson's menu looks good. Chilled fruit cup with sherbet. Mince pie. Freshly baked rolls and butter. Orange drink! Mints!

Actually, this is a scan from a 1955 Village Voice. So, unfortunately, you won't be able to feast at the Greenwich Village HoJo's tomorrow, nor at any of the other places mentioned here. They're all gone.
Maybe it's best to take the writer's advice: "the wisest thing is to go to a friend's home and get fractured."
-A look back at the HoJo's of Times Square, the history of the building that held it, and what's there now.
Exactly my game plan. Happy Gobble Gobble.
ReplyDeleteLovely.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the American Eagle flagship store that just opened at the old HoJos spot on Times Square?
Thank you for those, Jeremiah. I love old menus.
ReplyDeleteoh yes, i saw the American Eagle mothership. it's more billboard than building. we lost a lot when they tore down old 1551.
ReplyDeletei'll add a link.
Hojo Greenwich Village? Address?
ReplyDeleteWe're off in a group to Keen's tomorrow...the menu is similar, even if the costs are hugely disparate. And Keen's was there long before HoJo's.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, we'll get fractured among friends.
Happy Thanksgiving!
i'm pretty sure this HoJo's was once where the Barnes & Noble is now on 8th St and 6th Ave. but i could be mistaken.
ReplyDeleteKeen's is very cool.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jeremiah. Among the things--and people--I'm thankful for are you and your insightful, interesting Web site.
ReplyDeleteThe Howard Johnson's was directly across Sixth Avenue where McDonald's is currently located. I can remember some woozy mornings spent there after all night movies at the Elgin.
ReplyDeletethanks Anon--and i am certainly thankful for all the folks who read and relate to this blog.
ReplyDeleteand who quickly answer questions, too, like Mark--i had no idea the HoJo's was in that little McD's, thought it had been on the corner. now i think barnes & noble had been Nedick's.
Nedick's sounds right for the Barnes & Noble.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Village HoJo was where the McDonalds and the newsstand are. I think it may have extended to include that electronics store (if that is still there). But that was definitely the locus.
ReplyDeleteI even seem to recall a subway entrance there as well, the stairs right near the HoJo entrance
Yes, there was some kind of Nedick's where Barnes and Noble now stands.
Zoning trivia: part of the Greenwich Village Special Zoning District that is in place around the area of 8th and 6th Avenue precludes storefronts where the purchaser can stand on the sidewalk and be served from inside, which is what Nedick's did.
Likely the tawdry Nedick's street scene precipitated that.
That is why you must go inside the Papaya store on 6th and 8th to get a hot dog, unlike in their other locations, for example.
It wasn't Nedick's, it was a very large and tawdry orange and yellow Nathan's.
ReplyDeleteYes there was a Nathan's there in the 1970's-it was a really nice place and the hot dogs were really good.
ReplyDeleteNedicks & Nathan's were both at 396 Sixth Ave at different times .
