*Everyday Chatter

With old-school Guss' Pickles leaving Manhattan, where can we go for that walk-along, sidewalk pickle-barrel experience? At 6th Ave and Carmine, from Wed-Fri, you can find Horman's Best Pickles. It's not old-school, but it is pickles, and they smell good:

When I first started reading blogs--I came to yours Jeremiah --from Forgotten New York--then I went to Neither More Nor Less-Bob's great blog and then I knew what I had to do...BLOG! EV Grieve was read next and I was on my way. Now I have 2 blogs and am a happy blogger. Bob Arihood has been an inspiration for me. His blog reopened my eyes and got me thinking and creating. Love you guys.

Well, NYC has been Disneyfied, therefore, there is no need for Disney to be around here any longer.

The Jane Hotel is messing with the wrong crowd. Lived for years on the street - quiet, beautiful, isolated. This was when area residents were primarily renters. There was an influx of owners yet whenever a threatening issue emerged, it became Jane Street versus Them. The Street Association is top notch; it doesn't start fights, it wins them! The owners of the Jane have "dissed" area residents and for this, there is no forgiveness. The hotel owners should not be surprised to see the personal and financial of their lives made public. This is NYC's Street of Authors. I'm sure the writing has begun.

pickle guys RULE. company was started by a former guss employee, so there was bitterness there, plus there was also a separate unrelated squabble among various guss factions about the guss name, which was licensed to another company. my family did a taste test last year -- every variety of guss pickle (from the LES stand, not the commercial brand) vs every parallel variety of pickle from the pickle guys (there are many MORE kinds of pickle guy pickles!) -- the results were unanimous. for every pickle, and from every voter, from the 3-year-old to the 42-year-old: pickle guys pickles reign supreme. plus: really fun shopping experience. the guys are hilarious. we often take visitors on the LES jewy foodie trifecta tour: kossar's, pickle guys, and doughnut plant. ok, now i'm hungry.

I can't remember how I stumbled upon Bob's blog, but I do remember reading through the entire archive the first time I saw it. No one else captures the humanity, humor, beauty and importance of the Tompkins Square neighborhood quite like Arihood and I hate to think of a morning when I wake up and there is no longer a 'hood news report.

Please don't go! It's not necessary to post every day, but it's just reassuring knowing someone is out there watching over those who might otherwise be forgotten, preserving their names and faces in the story of NYC.

I could see why Bob would consider giving up the blog. Anyone who works with or is surrounded by drug and alcohol addicts knows how exhausting it can be to get caught up in their toxic world. I would love for Bob to get a break from all the dysfunction for his own sanity but he a devoted soul.

Horman's stand is run by the nicest people! I stopped by with my friends three year old and they gave her 2 pickles on a stick which she loved ! I only had a few bucks on me and the gentleman serving us would only take one dollar for which he gave us a container full of pickels for her.
That's old school to me, a vendor that knows a kind gesture will earn him a customer for life!

I really hope you are not lying about Disney....that's a ray of hope after a long day working in what appears to be an incredibly disney ruined city.
