On 23rd and 7th, Burritoville to become Lucky's Famous burger shop. Famous? Well, there's one on 52nd and now they're spreading:

And right next door, what was (I think) a frame store is becoming...a Michigan Militia or some other paramilitary hideout? Hard to tell with the U.S Marines and "Don't Tread on Me" flags draped in the covered windows:

Another take on the recession's upside for NYC: "some of the worst kind of New York types are less in evidence. The wannabes who walk down the street shouting into their cell phones, trying to look like wheeler dealers, the masters of the universe types who stare .....somber and smug.... through the tinted windows of their black limos; the over dressed, over jeweled and over-ampted shoppers for whom nothing is quite right. You know the types?" [HuffPo]

  2. First I would like to mention this OTTOMANELLI & SONS HAS THE BEST BURGERS IN NEW YORK CITY PERIOD.
THEIR LEXINGTON AVENUE LOCATION IS INCREDIBLE.

It's a NEW YORK CITY INSTITUTION.
but people don't care about nyc anymore.

According to some reviews about "Lucky's Famous Burgers" (I've never heard of them before:

My firm places a big order with Luckys almost every week and we've had nothing but great food and service. By far the best burger in the hood. We've tried them all.

  3. I hate horrible people, too, but "overdressed" is not a quality that is going to sour me. I've had just about enough of ballcaps, arse-antler tattoos + exposed flab, and bare feet on chairs in cafés.

  4. What the HuffPo columnist said about the disappearance of the douchebags, I just don't see it. Neither did the one commentator on the post. I did have some hope during the cold weather when the cellphone walkers and textwalkers thinned out, but they are now all back in force.

The strange thing is how full restaurants and bars obviously designed to appeal to this demographic are today, when you here stories of places struggling in other parts of the country. I think its evidence the Wall Street bailout money had an effect.

  5. The bitching about obnoxious people is disingenuous. It's because they're rich obnoxious people.

If they were poor folks shrieking into payphones, somber-smug merchants in dingy office supply stores, or teeny retired women with horror movie makeup acting all pissy at a lunch counter, we'd be in love with their behavior - call it "attitude," the treasure and lifeblood of New York.

I don't mean to give the rich a break. Let's just call obnoxious obnoxious, wherever, whenever, and whoever.
