La Casalinga
After 16 years on 1st Ave and 7th St., La Casalinga is closing on Monday due to a rent increase thanks to the building's new owner. They might be moving to the West Village or maybe Williamsburg. The future is uncertain. What is certain is that I will miss their delicious and cheap salads and pastas, which I've been eating for a decade and a half.
This was one of the last affordable places to eat in the ever-vanishing East Village.
*&^%&(*&^ I recall this place opening right around the time that I moved here...makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteWhile I wasn't a regular, I always appreciated their good, inexpensive good and appreciation of the neighborhood. This sucks.
does anyone know what's going in on the northwest corner of 2nd ave and 5th st(formerly mosto's)? it looks almost ready, but i can't tell what it is. another sportsbar would be sweet.
ReplyDeletewow, i just placed an order via delivery.com on thursday night. They made no mention of closing on monday - i've ordered in past but obviously not frequent enough.

ReplyDeleteWe left NYC in 1970, but my Dad was commenting on your website...he basically said NYC is the thyroid of the nation...and Generica is the modern theme of Gotham...which has spread like a virus everywhere. I love your site because it seals what I have been thinking for a while...but in a way I wish there was no need for your website. I live in northern CT and find less and less of a reason to come to Manhattan anymore...we have Northampton up the road...and they are experiencing the same Generica effect...albeit a much smaller scale. Lets hope things change...i suspect only an economic crash would do the trick though..
Another sports bar would be sweet? Plenty of those in Ohio; go home, and leave this glorious city to the natives. Get the f--k lost.
ReplyDeleteinteresting comments from "i am rappaport". if i'm not mistaken they seem to imply that this Generica effect is originating in NYC, and moving outward in a unidirectional fashion. this and related blogs assert the opposite: that it is the influx of suburbanites, and hence their vapid tastes and sociopathic need for predictability, that are largely to blame. there are still others who would say the entire USA is just sprawl from Europe. your thoughts on this JM?
ReplyDeleteI stopped into La Casalinga on Saturday for a late lunch - arugula salad and lobster ravioli. delicious!
ReplyDeleteI am so sad. This was my favorite Italian in the city. You know it was authentic when the servers barely spoke English. They made no mention of their closing. here today, gone tomorrow. I will miss them greatly.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I used to order from La Casalinga all the time when we were in college. No matter what we ordered, sandwiches, salads or pasta, it was always amazing. We are so sad to hear that it closed.
ReplyDeleteHey!!! I've been looking for information about this restaurant for ages.
ReplyDeleteDo You know where they moved to, that is if they have re-opened anywhere in the city? PLEASE let me know!!!
sorry Anon, haven't heard anything about their reopening.
