In Porto, Portugal, the lovely Imperial Cafe has been repurposed as a McDonald's. It's obviously not the same as a luxury restaurant, but it's better than bulldozing it.

http://www.localporto.com/wp-content/uploads/mcdonalds-imperial-porto-580x380.jpgHushpuppy212https://www.blogger.com/profile/11760004451261416778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-37161426152951529812016-11-04T06:48:00.121-04:002016-11-04T06:48:00.121-04:00It seems hard to believe that the Landmarks Commis...It seems hard to believe that the Landmarks Commission would protect this building just to preserve the seahorses. From the Abbott photo you can see that the building is already more or less destroyed, all the top floors have been lopped off.

@Goggla - It would have been nice to see the seahorses preserved in some way, but it's pretty clear they're just smashing them up to take them away.
Mitchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03826027765991475367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-30735624240884847942016-10-31T18:00:11.191-04:002016-10-31T18:00:11.191-04:00Looks like they incorporated the motif for a good ...Looks like they incorporated the motif for a good many years, but then I guess they decided the design was not globally generic enough. I watched the same ...A building in the wrong hands.
I watched the same thing happen to the Chickering Piano building on West 57th, where Vornado did the dishonors. The building was easily razed thereafter. Unfortunately, the scrapers won't really see what they're scraping. Useless bric-a-brac - like our confounded imaginations that need to be in the care of advertisers, telling us what products we really need to be imagining.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15565030682360603009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-33572576073748254182016-10-31T10:51:43.836-04:002016-10-31T10:51:43.836-04:00This McDonald's is on 28th Street, not 27th/This McDonald's is on 28th Street, not 27th/Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14791683493055770602noreply@blogger.com
