She operated this stand in the 1950's and 60's. Do you know anything about her story.
Please advise asap, Peter, at

blackeyeimages@gmail.comPeter Cole-M.Photog.Cr.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02430015347504798371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-55489282892957335892013-10-24T16:57:08.415-04:002013-10-24T16:57:08.415-04:00Only in New York!Only in New York!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-83135097033633079252012-08-23T10:10:34.403-04:002012-08-23T10:10:34.403-04:00Oddly enough I recently had occasion to learn abou...Oddly enough I recently had occasion to learn about this. Newsstands are currently licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs. I don't know if that existed in the 1910s (probably not), but they may be a good place to start looking for old records.Brendannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-62638169913104563722012-08-23T08:53:22.881-04:002012-08-23T08:53:22.881-04:00Jonathan, good questions. i'm sorry i don'...Jonathan, good questions. i'm sorry i don't know the answers. maybe someone who reads this blog will know?Jeremiah Mosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11791516443125872364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-28521884841219190432012-08-22T16:50:26.576-04:002012-08-22T16:50:26.576-04:00Hi,

I am doing some research on newsstands because an ancestor of mine (who arrived in 1889) maintained a newsstand in NYC until his death. It is listed on the census in 1900, 1910 & 1920 & on his death certificate in 1923. Do you know where I might find information about his stand? Where they were registered or with what agency? It sounds like his ownership coincided with the issues you describe in the post. Many thanks in advance. Jeremiah's feature will be put back eventually, no worries.

forgotten-ny.comKevin Walshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02319790470133135889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-65632499374500170292011-10-26T09:29:18.547-04:002011-10-26T09:29:18.547-04:00I agree with the 1923 NYTimes opinion. There was also a NYT article yesterday about the MTA removing garbage cans from subway platforms(and how that made the platforms cleaner!). In the article there was sniping at the platform newsstand on the downtown 8th st & Bway.
