Thank you, Domino's, for the gift of many years of the air smelling like burnt sugar when I walked the East River esplanade across from your great, grimy bulk, and goodbye. Perhaps it's too early, but it will be interesting when those who follow this urban process close enough will begin to talk not about hyper-gentrification as Jeremiah does but about post-gentrification, following the kind of post-colonial logic that Walker enacts in her art. Nowhere is mentioned that this factory, which was active until the late 90s and union busting activities shut it down, supported a neighborhood of working people, many of them people of color, most of whom have already been displaced. We watch the slow destruction of our little corner of Williamsburg, knowing we are lucky that the tide of wealth that has buried most of the neighborhood was kept at bay years longer due to the Southside being less desirable. Yeah, that means poorer and rougher. Half our bldg was gentrified, only because after 3 rounds and 10 years in Loft Board court, the landlord couldn't evict us. It is all hearbreaking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-5011880981606201342014-06-17T13:40:59.469-04:002014-06-17T13:40:59.469-04:00One of your best and most poignant, JM.One of your best and most poignant, JM.Romy Ashbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06314331752471504621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-33379388206917608752014-06-17T12:47:16.758-04:002014-06-17T12:47:16.758-04:00Great post, Jeremiah.Great post, Jeremiah.Laura Goggin Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15517481509431547970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-43124630810504409092014-06-17T11:33:36.010-04:002014-06-17T11:33:36.010-04:00too bad they cant just renovate the building &...too bad they cant just renovate the building & keep the character. demolishing it is not necessary. soon everything will look like hongkong.laura r.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-24972833003557981362014-06-17T11:15:47.963-04:002014-06-17T11:15:47.963-04:00What about all of the affordable housing that is b...What about all of the affordable housing that is being included in this project?
