Jacobs didn't do it by standing up for the rat-infested hell-holes which the elitist 'Anonymous' here thinks describes every street in New York without a Starbucks. She did it by daring to suggest that neighborhoods are more than a collection of living spaces. Where have you gone, Jane? The yuppie/hipster is accused of either directly destroying or supporting the destruction of everything that doesn’t suit his tastes. Naturally angry at being so accused, he writes a rebuttal in which he maintains that whatever he has helped to destroy didn’t have value in the first place, thus confirming the original accusation. There really is no area of disagreement, he just wishes you appreciated how hard he’s worked to get rid of you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-683382864156505640.post-53020139965049638302007-10-04T21:48:00.000-04:002007-10-04T21:48:00.000-04:00"The relentless bulldozer of homogenization." Sto..."The relentless bulldozer of homogenization." Stop. Right there. Do the following. Go to some trendy, gentrified, "bulldozed" neighborhood. I dunno, try Boerum Hill, Brooklyn for starters, but any one will do. Now walk about five blocks north and a few blocks East. And you're in - oh my goodness - a bad neighborhood! Oh, I'm sorry, what 99% of the planet calls a bad neighborhood you call a neighborhood with "soul" or something. In either case, it doesn't have a Starbucks. Or a decent grocery store. But it sure will have graffiti! Or instead walk a few blocks south and you're in ... a big ugly public housing complex! Incredible, I would have thought developers turned those all into fancy condos except for the fact that they are STILL ALL OVER THE CITY EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK. An enourmous chunk of NYC is ungentrified and unpleasant. Why you want more of the city to be like those places, I can only guess. But regardless, how can you see the gentrification of the Upper West Side - still home to its own huge ugly public housing complex, btw - as reflective of NYC as a whole? Grow up and appreciate the city's prosperity. Or if nothing else, understand the city as a whole.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
