Mini Mars Bar

Our friend Randy Hage, sculptor of amazing miniatures has done it again. This time, he has taken his skills to the dearly departed Mars Bar.

We first discovered Randy's stunning work in 2010 when he added it to the Vanishing New York flickr pool. In an interview here, Randy said he wanted to preserve the vanishing city with his deeply detailed sculptures. As he put it, "The observed changes are obvious and pronounced. It became very evident to me that the visual character of the city at street level was being lost."

Randy started creating the city in miniature with Donuts Coffee Shop and Vesuvio Bakery, and has since completed Ideal Hosiery. He had hoped to complete Mars Bar before the demolition, but had a loss in his own family at the time.

It's a thrill to know that in one artist's studio, the lost city is returning, brick by tiny brick.

We'd love to see these works in person in New York City. Until that day comes, if you're on the West Coast, you can see Randy's miniatures at the Flower-Pepper Gallery in Pasadena, from May 19 - June 21.

  1. The detail is quite impressive... I'd also like to see his work in an exhibit in the neighborhood ...

  2. He is a true artist and puts to shame the talentless poseurs and hacks who are in so many galleries.

  3. So strangely moving. Thanks, Jeremiah!

The videos (linked to from the Vanishing New York flickr pool) that show his work in progress are fascinating, and give you a sense of the scale he's working in. I too really hope he gets a gallery show here.

  9. Have it at Tompkins Square Bagels?TSB already showcases local art on its walls. Chris, can this be done? I would pay a door charge. Bagels and art, a win, win.

  11. How about Theater for the New City gallery on First Avenue? I remember they did that interesting Quentin Crisp exhibition a while back.
These are incredible works. I'm crazy about miniature versions of things - magic stuff.
