*Everyday Chatter

Because one can never get enough complaining about Brooklyn "mommy culture run amok." [CR]

Jan 18: Enjoy an Evening with Zoe Beloff at MOMA. She will be discussing her current exhibition "Dreamland: The Coney Island Amateur Psychoanalytic Society and its Circle 1926- 1972," which you should not miss and can read about here. [MOMA]

Yesterday, Gothamist asked where they could find the secret porno theater of Times Square. It's on 7th between 47th and 48th. Here's the outside view from Google maps. Right under the red #7 you see the tell-tale mirrored diamonds--just follow the trail:

"reminds us what the arts scene in the East Village, SoHo and TriBeCa was like at the height of the AIDS epidemic, before gentrification and before the downtown ethos and aesthetic were packaged into family viewing spectacles like Rent or those by Blue Man Group." [NYT]

  1. That sound you hear is the pitter-patter of a million people rushing in to Playland Gifts...

  3. I have to admit I don't get Park Slope. It seems even the City Room readers are fed up with the place. Though it has a couple of good coffee places and some good restaurants. Living in New York now is really finding the relatively cool places in the middle of the douchey dull places anyway. There are no cool neighborhoods anymore.

I had thought Park Slope was the 1980s version of the Upper West Side migrated south to border on a different park, but really it is much worse. More like some places in 1980s Westchester. And unfortuantely the vibe is spreading, I nearly got runover today by a stroller pushing couple in Manhattan.

  5. I went up to Times Square this last weekend and ventured inside the souvenir shop to see if I could find the forgotten porn theater. Access to it seems to be through an employee area in the back. I couldn't see the stairs from the doorway, but the mosaic mirrors and some of the old red/yellow decoration is still there. As I was being watched, I didn't feel comfortable going any further...perhaps someone with more nerves will make a go of it. I did buy a naked lady lighter with flashing LED nips to commemorate the trip... :)
