Bowery Protest

Take a sneak peek at tonight's protest in the East Village: Check out the "Die Yuppie" collection here.

The crowd of about 100 started at the corner by Blue & Cream, demonstrated outside the Bowery Wine Company, then marched to CBGB/Varvatos. They continued past the Bowery Hotel, stopped to demonstrate outside 47 E. 3rd St., then down to Avenue A, through Tompkins Square Park, and finished at the Christodora House, where the rallying cry "Die Yuppie Scum" was born--and where tonight a bunch of yuppies came out to take souvenir photos of the protestors.

Full report to come on Monday.

Perfect example of why I am glad my family talked me out of wanting to become a cop.

I kind of feel sympathy for them in these type of situations.

I saw it. I felt more pity for them than anything and the 'new' locals (Avalon residents, bar patrons, etc.) just sort of rolled their eyes at them and looked annoyed/amused. The cops seemed to be patient with a 'do your yelling and let's get this over with' attitude. There wasn't any real danger in the air like at the '88 Tompkins police riots - just a 'look at the kooks and their wacky signs' response from onlookers. I feel for them, however, as I could be run out of the hood anytime if the landlord decides to sell.

What's more amusing is that the Young Republicans happened to have had one social event at Bowery Wine Bar, it is not their "meeting place". So they got THAT wrong.
And, of course, even more amusing is that on Friday evening, most Yups were already on their 3rd G&T in the Hamptons and missed the whole ragtag lil' bunch and their yelling.
But whatevs.

When I moved away from NY I thought that I'd miss it. That was 11 years ago and to be honest there's really nothing left of what made NY exciting. Excitement doesn't exisit any more unless you're super rich. Now the developers are after Coney Island's amusement area for luxury hotels and condos Can anyone imagine elegant snob tourists taking the subway to their "luxury" hotel or condo in Coney?

Unfortunately, I can. I've occasionally seen those little pricks taking that long F train ride, most likely after having read in Zagat Survey that Coney Island has been "discovered". They stick out like sore thumbs, but I gather from the amount of giggling they do that they must be enjoying the novelty of public transportation.
Now that I think of it, I'm sure a nice "Die Yuppie Scum" "Yuppie Go Home" sticker on the train would take some of the mirth out of those giggles.
